Army Cyclocross Championships Chetwynd Bks 26 Jan 22

Race Report
Unusually dry and fast conditions were experienced by those who competed at the 2021/22 CX Champs. The course at Chetwynd was changed from the 2020 event with an added longer climb from the start finish area and some tricky off cambers, the sand pit was kept in for extra fun as was the concrete step up.
With the sun shining the riders were away on the start loop. In the Mens race Capt Hale, WO1 Marriott and Sgt Bevan established themselves at the front of the race with the chase being led by WO2 Waters and LCpl Chatwin with LCpl White and Maj’s Reese and Hunt part of the chasing pack. In the Ladies race 2Lt Dysdale got off to a strong start but was being closely followed by Capt Wood.
On into the race Marriott faded after lap 3 with Bevan taking the lead chased by Hale. White, Waters and Chatwin were still chasing hard with the rest of the packing snapping at their heels. As the race progressed Hale was able to bridge over the Bevan and take the lead with 2-3 laps to go. Meanwhile White had broken clear of the chasers to take up 3rd place. At the same time Drysdale was maintaining her lead to around 20 secs with Wood trying everything to claw her back.
Going into the final lap the gap to Hale from Bevan was around 10 seconds with Bevan going full gas to try and bridge the gap. in the end Hale was strong enough to hold him off to take the win. Despite a valiant chase by Wood in the ladies race Drysdale was able to hold the lead until the finish to take the win.
In the MTB category Sgt Willis put in a strong performance to lead from the start and to take the win by 1 min 40secs over WO2 Sherratt.
